A Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) in Substance Use Disorder (SUD) services is a trained professional—often someone with lived experience of addiction and recovery—who provides peer-based support to individuals seeking or maintaining recovery. Here’s an overview you can use for education, job descriptions, or documentation:

  • Lived experience in recovery (typically 1- 2 years of sobriety preferred)
  • Completion of a state-recognized Peer Support or Recovery Specialist certification
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and harm reduction principles
  • .
  • To provide emotional, social, and practical support to individuals recovering from substance use disorders, promoting long-term recovery and stability through peer mentorship, advocacy, and connection to community resources.
    • Offer peer mentoring and share personal recovery experiences to inspire hope.
    • Help clients develop recovery plans and set achievable goals.
    • Connect individuals to treatment programs, support groups ( AA and CR), housing, employment, and educational resources.
    • Provide crisis support and assist in navigating relapse prevention strategies.
    • Advocate for clients’ needs within healthcare, social service, and legal systems.
    • Facilitate recovery groups, workshops, and life skills sessions.
    • Document client progress while maintaining confidentiality and ethical boundaries.
    • Strong communication and active listening skills
    • Empathy and nonjudgmental attitude
    • Knowledge of addiction, recovery models, and community resources
    • Crisis intervention and motivational interviewing skills
    • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (therapists, case managers, probation officers, etc.)


Position Requirements:

Lived experience in mental health recovery to assist other adults in their mental health recovery.

Must be 18 years old

High School Diploma or GED

Travel and the use of a personal vehicle are required.

Must have a valid Texas Driver License and an acceptable driving record

Must pass background check and drug screening
